Meet the Team Behind Arthritis Care
At our practice, experienced rheumatologists Dr Cathy Spargo and Dr Rehana Bhorat bring more than a decade of expertise in diagnosing and treating a wide range of rheumatological and autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, systemic lupus, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, ankylosing spondylitis, and related disorders such as polymyalgia rheumatica and Sjögren’s syndrome.
We also offer patients access to innovative treatments through our clinical trial unit, headed by Debbie Mark, and supported by a dedicated team who coordinate seamlessly with radiology, pathology, and clinical research partners. Our goal is always the same: to make your rheumatology visit as pleasant as possible while delivering the very latest in compassionate, up-to-date care.
Dr Cathy Spargo
MBChB (UCT), FCP(SA), Cert Rheumatology (SA)
Dr Catherine Spargo studied medicine at the University of Cape Town and went on to qualify as a specialist rheumatologist through the College of Medicine of South Africa. Over the course of her career she has gained wide-ranging experience, having worked in several hospitals both locally and abroad, including Ernest Oppenheimer Hospital in Welkom, Derriford Hospital in England, and Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.
With her extensive clinical background, Dr Spargo brings a wealth of knowledge in diagnosing and managing inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. She is known for her thorough, compassionate approach to patient care, and her commitment to helping people live well with rheumatological conditions. She currently practices as a rheumatologist and physician at Arthritis Care in Pinelands, Cape Town.
Dr Rehana Bhorat
MBChB (UCT), FCP(SA), Cert Rheumatology (SA)
Dr Rehana Bhorat completed her medical degree at the University of Cape Town and qualified as a specialist rheumatologist through the College of Medicine of South Africa. She has trained and worked in leading academic and clinical settings, gaining extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of arthritis and autoimmune diseases.
Dr Bhorat has a particular interest in clinical research and is actively involved in clinical trials, giving her patients early access to innovative treatments and ensuring she remains at the forefront of advances in rheumatology. Known for her thoughtful, patient-centred approach, she is dedicated to providing personalised care and ongoing support throughout each patient’s treatment journey. She currently practices as a rheumatologist and physician at Arthritis Care in Pinelands, Cape Town.
Debbie Mark
(BPharm) Pharmacist & Clinical Trial Unit Lead
Debbie is a pharmacist at the Arthritis Clinical Trial Centre, where she leads the clinical trial unit and works closely with a small, dedicated team to deliver high-quality research outcomes. With more than seven years of experience in clinical research and a broad background across the pharmacy industry, she brings both deep expertise and a collaborative spirit to her work.
Throughout her career, Debbie has held a variety of roles within pharmacy, giving her a well-rounded understanding of patient care, medication management, and the clinical development process. She is passionate about advancing research to improve outcomes for people living with arthritis and is known for her approachable manner, attention to detail, and commitment to supporting both participants and colleagues throughout the research journey.

Accounts & Administration Manager
Nasreen has been an integral part of our rheumatology practice for more than ten years. As Accounts and Administration Manager, she ensures the smooth running of daily operations with efficiency, care, and professionalism. Known for her warm personality and willingness to help, she is always happy to assist with billing queries and administrative support.
Nasreen brings positivity and kindness to both our patients and team. Her dedication, attention to detail, and friendly approach make her a deeply valued member of the practice.
